Potomac’s Street Drama: Karen Huger Loses Bid to Suppress Evidence in Maryland Court!

The legal troubles for Real Housewives of Potomac star Karen Huger continue to unfold, as a Maryland judge recently denied her motion to suppress statements she made to police and bodycam footage from her DUI arrest, In Touch exclusively reports. The reality TV personality, known as “The Grand Dame,” found herself embroiled in legal turmoil after a serious car accident in March 2023, where her 2017 Maserati collided with a median, a street sign, and ultimately a tree.

The Incident That Started It All

According to court documents, Karen, 61, was alone in the car when the accident occurred. Police arrested her on suspicion of driving under the influence after observing signs of impairment, including unsteady movements, slurred speech, and the smell of alcohol, as noted by witnesses at the scene. Prosecutors later charged her with DUI, negligent driving, endangering property, and multiple other counts.

Karen claimed she was emotionally distraught at the time of the crash, linking her mental state to grieving the loss of her parents in 2017. She released a heartfelt statement shortly after the accident, saying, “Grief comes and goes in waves, and with Mother’s Day approaching, it has felt more like a tsunami. I’m still in shock from last night’s incident but grateful to be alive.”

Karen’s Legal Argument Falls Flat

In an attempt to suppress evidence, Karen argued that officers violated her rights by failing to read her the Miranda Warning before questioning her. She stated that her remarks to police officers Kyle Baxter and Brett Trahan were made during an illegal interrogation and therefore inadmissible in court. Additionally, she sought to have the entire case dismissed.

The prosecutors, however, vehemently opposed her motion. They highlighted that Karen’s statements were made voluntarily in the presence of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel while she was being evaluated for potential injuries. The prosecutors stated that these interactions did not qualify as a “custodial interrogation” requiring Miranda rights.

The judge ultimately sided with the prosecutors, citing the public and non-custodial nature of the questioning. He concluded, “All statements made by [Karen] until the police formally announced that she was under arrest are admissible against her at trial.”

Karen’s Version of Events vs. Witness Accounts

In her defense, Karen claimed that the accident occurred after swerving to avoid a head-on collision with another car, which she said fled the scene. She described being overcome with emotion after discussing sensitive personal matters with a friend at dinner earlier that evening.

However, witness statements painted a different picture. A caller at the scene reported Karen appeared confused and smelled of alcohol. The bodycam footage reportedly corroborates this account, capturing her unsteady movements and fragmented responses to police questions.

Karen’s husband, Raymond Huger, arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and remained by her side until her arrest. Despite his support, Karen faced further scrutiny for her reluctance to provide clear answers to police about the incident.

The Grand Dame’s Reflection on a Troubling Night

In her statement following the accident, Karen emphasized the importance of emotional awareness while driving. “I would like to stress, it’s important to understand your emotional state when driving,” she shared. She also credited her seatbelt with saving her life, stating, “My Mother may be my Guardian Angel, but the seatbelt saved my life.”

What’s Next for Karen Huger?

With the judge allowing the bodycam footage and Karen’s statements as evidence, her legal battle is far from over. As she prepares for her day in court, Karen faces mounting challenges that could tarnish her reputation as a beloved cast member on The Real Housewives of Potomac.
