Karen Huger’s DUI Scandal: The Grand Dame’s Perfect Image Shattered in Courtroom Drama
Karen Huger, star of The Real Housewives of Potomac, has been found guilty on most charges stemming from a DUI incident in Maryland last March. This development has garnered significant attention, not only for the gravity of the case but also for its potential impact on the “Grand Dame’s” public image.
Huger’s attorney, A. Scott Bolden, told PEOPLE exclusively, “While we are disappointed with the jury’s verdict, we respect their decision and will continue to defend Mrs. Huger’s right to appeal.” He further called for support and prayers for Huger and her family during this challenging time.
The Fateful Night
On March 19, Huger, 61, was involved in a serious accident while driving alone in Potomac. Police reported that she lost control, crossed a median, and struck multiple street signs. Although she was unharmed, she faced several charges, including driving under the influence (DUI and DWI), negligent driving, and failure to control speed to avoid a collision.
During her court appearance on December 17, witnesses testified that they noticed a strong smell of alcohol emanating from Huger’s car and observed her swaying as she attempted to step into an ambulance. Bodycam footage shown in court captured a police officer stating that Huger was “hammered,” a claim she vehemently denied, calling it “bulls—.”
Karen Huger’s Explanation
Following the incident, Huger broke her silence, explaining that she had been struggling with grief over her mother’s passing. “Grief comes and goes in waves, and with Mother’s Day approaching, it has felt more like a tsunami,” she told TMZ. Huger said she was crying on her way home after an emotional dinner with a friend when she swerved to avoid an oncoming car and ended up hitting a divider and a tree.
“I’m bruised but grateful to be alive!” she stated, adding that her seatbelt and the memory of her mother, whom she referred to as her “Guardian Angel,” saved her life. Huger also used the moment to remind fans to evaluate their emotional state before driving.
Public and Cast Reactions
The incident quickly became a hot topic among the RHOP cast in season 9. While some cast members expressed sympathy, others criticized Huger’s handling of the situation, prompting her to respond sharply: “Are you wishing harm on me?”
The Grand Dame’s Future
Karen Huger is scheduled to be sentenced on January 29, but the incident has already shaken her carefully curated image as a strong and poised woman. However, with the support of her family and fans, Huger is determined to face this challenge head-on, just as she has overcome many obstacles in her life.
The Real Housewives of Potomac season 9, which heavily features Karen’s legal troubles, airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo.
