Rebecca Minkoff of RHONY Opens Up About Her Scientology Connections, Criticism from Former Employees, and Her Reasons for Joining the Show
The Real Housewives of New York is back for an exciting new season, and it’s bringing with it some familiar faces as well as intriguing newcomers. Among the returning cast from the first season of the reboot, one name is making significant waves: fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff. Her casting has sparked plenty of conversation, not just because of her impressive career but also due to her association with the Church of Scientology.
As far as Housewives history goes, Rebecca is the first cast member who is also a Scientologist. Founded in 1954, the Church of Scientology holds many beliefs, with one of the central tenets being that humans are immortal spiritual beings, or “thetans,” trapped in physical bodies. However, Scientology has often been the subject of controversy, with accusations of abuse and manipulation casting a shadow over the religion.
Recently, Rebecca opened up to Page Six about her faith and how it has impacted her life, both personally and professionally. Reflecting on her decision to join RHONY, she shared, “It’s fun, it’s funny, with a little bit of drama – I thought, ‘Okay, I can sign up for that.’”
When asked about the criticism she has faced due to her faith, Rebecca had a powerful message of tolerance. “We’re at a time where we can either divide and lead with hate and bigotry, or we can be tolerant of others’ beliefs,” she stated. She also explained how Scientology has positively influenced her: “It has helped me personally, professionally, and has been an incredible tool to manage stress. That’s what I use it for – it’s a method that works for me.”
Previously, Rebecca described Scientology as a practice that allows her to separate the body from the spirit, which has helped her confront personal challenges and overcome inner struggles.
In addition to addressing her religious beliefs, Rebecca didn’t shy away from discussing some negative feedback her business has received. Former employees on Glassdoor have labeled her workplace as “toxic” and “negative.” However, Rebecca dismissed the critiques, saying, “Criticism and fault-finding are part of human nature. It’s unfortunate when it’s ill-intentioned.” She added, “I think much of it was unfair.”
Rebecca also pointed out how female business leaders, often referred to as “girlbosses,” have faced harsher criticism and been forced to step down due to public pressure, whereas men in similar situations tend to hold their ground. “Did these women make mistakes? Yes. Could they have apologized and moved forward? Absolutely,” she said. “But when men face takedowns, they refuse to step down. They stand in their power, whether they deserve it or not.”
Fans can catch Rebecca Minkoff navigating her personal life, career, and religious beliefs on The Real Housewives of New York every Tuesday night, where her journey is bound to continue sparking conversation.
